The MMCA exhibition had as its subject the museum’s collection. My project was divided into two sections, the first being a collage of postcards from my personal collection gathered over many years. For me, postcards are images and remembrances. Postcards exist alone or together, similar to the process of working with layers of memories in my paintings. This project addresses the idea of “collection” by thinking about one’s collection displaying one’s taste vs. a museums’ public collection. I chose the artworks from the museum’s collections in the same manner as when I chose my personal images. They would be made into postcards and collaged together with my personal postcards similar to the way I display my images on the walls of my studio.
Another section consists of photographs I came across while researching images from the museum’s archive, from the artist Kwon Jinkyu’s scrapbook. Although it was a private collection, it was neatly arranged and labeled as if the artist expected it to be seen, and from it, I could detect the artist’s reflections and dilemma. Through these photographs, I faced his life: his studio, his work, his studies, his travels, etc. Through this back tracking process of visiting his studio, listening to his favorite music and reading his books, I started to think about the artist’s life, which overlapped with mine. This made me start the ‘wall’ paintings and the photographs were collaged onto the wall like fleeting images. Two walls face each other as if one artist’s collection is looking at another artist’s collection. A long, narrow and high ceilinged room is cautiously ajar like opening someone’s scrapbook. ‘Scrapbook’ is a collection of images from memories afar.
국립현대미술관 과천관에서 주관한 전시는 미술관의 소장품에 관한 것이었다. 이 작업은 두 섹션을 가지고 있는데, 하나는 내가 오랫동안 수집해오던 엽서들의 꼴라주이다. 엽서는 나에게 이미지이고 기억이다. 여러겹의 기억이 중첩되어 나의 그림이 완성되듯이 엽서는 혼자서 혹은 여럿이 따로 또 같이 존재한다. 개인의 취향에서 비롯된 ‘개인의 수집’과 미술관이라는 ‘공공기관의 컬렉션’에 관해 생각해보는 작업이다. 미술관 소장품들을 같은 태도로 고르고 엽서로 만들어, 그동안 내가 수집해온 엽서들과 함께 꼴라주한다. 설치 방식은 평소 나의 작업실 벽에 즐겁게 붙여왔던 이미지들의 콜라주방식을 그대로 취한다.
다른 섹션은 미술관 아카이브 소장자료들을 리서치하던중 발견한 권진규 작가의 스크랩북 사진들이다. 개인의 이미지 수집이지만 누군가의 시선을 의식한듯 잘 정리되어 있었고 작가의 시선과 생각과 고민이 드러나 있었다. 사진들을 통해서 그의 작업실을 보고 그의 작업들과 작업연구, 여행등 그가 밟아내려간 삶의 부분들을 마주하였다. 거꾸로 거슬러 올라가듯 그의 작업실을 가보고 그가 듣던 음악과 책과 장소들을 알아가는 과정에서 나는 ‘작가’의 삶에 대한 생각을 하게 되었고 그것이 나의 삶과 중첩되어 벽이 되어버린 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 작업실 벽같기도 하고 그림이기도 한 표면위로 그의 이미지들이 마치 바람에 날리듯 꼴라주방식으로 붙여졌다. 두 벽이 서로 마주 봄으로서 한 작가의 수집이 다른 작가의 수집을 만나는 과정을 겪는다. 길고 좁고 높은 방은 스크랩북을 들여다 보듯이 조심스럽게 열려 있다. ‘스크랩북’은 저편에 존재하는 기억의 이미지들의 컬렉션이다.
